Grandfather clocks were very popular at one time and could be found in every well to do home and even some not to well to do homes around the world.  Grandfather clocks are a form of floor clocks although not the only type of floor clocks, it is the most familiar type.  Other types of floor clocks are the grandmother clock and the daughter clocks. To the average person not well versed in the different models they will refer to all these types of clocks as grandfather clocks. The grandfather clock is not only the most recognized but also the most expensive and the most collected.

The grandfather clock is the tallest of the floor clocks. This style is usually heavy and tall, over 6 feet from base to top. Not only is it tall it is also wider than the other types of floor clocks. The cabinet is usually very ornate and can be distinguished by its heavy looking features. It can be crafted from a wide array of materials with wood being the most used.

This is a classic style that is treasured by many. They were typically displayed in foyers and entrance halls although it is not unusual to find them today displayed in living rooms, dinning rooms and other formal areas.

Grandfather clocks have a long history dating back too the early 1900′s. They replaced the than in vogue pendulum clocks.  The grandfather clocks were much more convenient and actually maintained time better. The original grandfather clocks were key wound, they are still manufactured today with the key wound but are also available in more modern options.

The Female Version- The Grandmother Clock

The grandmother clock is a slimmer shorter version of the grandfather clock. It was instituted to take up less space than the bulkier and taller grandfather clock.  The lines on the grandmother clock seem more feminine than the grandfather clock. The cabinet is slimmer and shorter and it has overall slimmer lines.

This model of the floor clocks well suited for smaller homes and smaller areas. It is not as overpowering as the grandfather clocks are. There are key wound models and other options. The grandmother clock does not have the long history that the grandfather clock has.

The Newest Addition

The newest addition to the floor clocks family is the daughter clock. This is the smallest of the models and is the least expensive. It is ideal for apartments and other small spaces that want to showcase one of these fabulous floor clocks.
